Ten Tips for Success…

…in maybe just about everything.

I know I said I wouldn’t talk about work as it pertains to my actual work, but I’m really proud to be a member of Edelman’s Global Women Executive Network (“GWEN” for short), as well as being proud of a recent blog post written by my company’s CEO, Richard Edelman, about women in the workforce, Edelman in particular.

It’s pretty awesome, and encouraging.

This morning one of my colleagues in GWEN sent around this fantastic list created by Margaret Marshall, Chief Justice of Massachusetts Supreme Court. Marshall provided this list at the Yale Celebration of Women in March 2010. They’re far too awesome not to share:

1. You cannot succeed without passion
2. You must learn all the rules – competence isn’t enough
3. Seize opportunities when presented, and beware they never come at the right time
4. Women must learn to tolerate the spotlight
5. Tolerate criticism and blame but do not take it personally – it’s not personal
6. Family should come first
7. Refuse to accept the premise that care of children and parents is a women’s job only
8. Pace yourself – you can’t have it all, all at once
9. Don’t be shy about who you are
10.You succeed by making alliances with other women – give credit to those who’ve paved the way.
11.[BONUS TIP] If someone asks if you’re a feminist, answer “Yes. and what did you mean by that?”

No. 4 is my favorite here. There is so much tied up in why this point is so important, and as the mother of a girl what it means for me to not only learn this myself, but also teach my daughter to become comfortable with it as well. Women are so conditioned to cower and apologize; I know that tends to be my modus operandi, and it’s something I try and work on daily.

FABULOUS! I am going to share this with my team. Sounds like a great company. I am having such amazing experiances with Thirty-One and it is woman centered. The biggest thing I took away from our recent conference was that the ceo, marketing guru’s, everyone follows the above. The culture of the company is like none I have seen before- thier motto is Celebrate, Encourage and Reward. I had the awesome opprotunity to have dinner with the CEO, Cindy Monroe and her husband that they never told me what I could do better- they thanked me for working so hard and told me I was fantastic. The CEO of my company told me I was “enough”. I think if more companies really realized what Edelman- and Thirty-One does the working force would be such a better place- and it would trikle down. Excited for you to have such a great support system-and love ya bunches anyways!
