Things That Have Been Awesome

1) Stacy’s Pita Chips, cinnamon and sugar. I had these over the weekend as a mid-day snack during our hypnobirthing class. Holy wow. Delightful. We went to Target and bought two bags.

2) Hypnobirthing class. It could not have been more wonderful to devote three hours to being pregnant, having a baby and all that comes with that. With the exception of this blog, I try to be hyper-aware that the world around me has other things to concern itself with than the gestation happening in my body. The process is admittedly all-consuming, but I know not everyone gives a hoot. So it was nice to spend Sunday with other pregnant people, all of whom seemed to share the same sort of philosophies and ideas that we do about this whole childbirthing process. Plus, there’s nothing like feeling supported.

3) My women friends. Yesterday I made a comment on Facebook that what first-time pregnant women love to hear is ill-advised commentary from strangers with what we should and should not be concerning ourselves. Yes, we love people telling us that what we’re concerned about is not important, especially from people we don’t know. It’s awesome. So no sooner did I post this did a slew of lovely people join in and share the most ludicrous stories they’ve been told when pregnant. How some people manage to carry along through their day without being smacked is shocking to me, at least judging by some of the outrageous things my friends have been told. It made me feel a lot better, though.

4) My job. I haven’t loved a job this much since I first became a reporter back in the 90s. Sure, there are days where Friday is the most welcome day ending in “y” and I’d rather be on a beach with my husband, but I am surrounded by interesting, lovely, kind and funny people. I get to work on projects that are challenging, fulfilling and with clients I genuinely enjoy helping. It’s not always easy, but it is always a place where I’m happy to be.

5) Winnie-the-Pooh. So this, along with Curious George, is one of the First Books we’ve bought for our daughter. Strangely enough, Winnie-the-Pooh also was the theme of my nursery when I was a baby, and I can assure you there was no conscious decision in my attraction to Winnie-the-Pooh, but I also have managed to buy a little blanket with a Pooh head attached to it. Scott thinks it’s because the Pooh I’m drawn to looks like Glin. This is probably likely.

6) Our anniversary. We’re less than two weeks away from celebrating our second anniversary. Originally we were going to head off to Lake Geneva for the weekend, but there’s just no way to afford it and not keep me up at night. I know everyone says to take a “babymoon” before you have your first kid, but I can’t rationalize a vacation on credit with a remodel ahead of us in weeks and a new car to buy this weekend. Plus, I can’t believe how lucky I am that I ended up marrying Scott, and I don’t need a fancy resort to celebrate that this year.

7) New car. I’m not a car person. I take public transportation every day to get to work, and I’ve never really cared much either way. I buy cars that are practical to my life at the moment, and what I can afford. It’s been six years with my Scion, and it’s paid off, but it’s really tiny and impractical for what we need coming up. While now as I see the cumbersome nature of car seats, pack-and-plays and strollers I understand exactly why people with multiple kids own minivans, we’re not minivan people and we’ve only got one kid so far. So this weekend we’re buying a Chevrolet Equinox, and I’m probably more excited about it than a non-car person should be. (Disclosure: Chevrolet is a client of mine at work, though that’s not why I’m buying this car. It’s an awesome car.)

8 ) Chilean Miners Rescue. Honestly. Twitter has annoyed me recently, what with the incessant navel-gazing and self-importance that it tends to generate out of traditionally reasonable people when there is a hot topic, but it was so awesome to wake up this morning to read in less than 140 characters that these guys were being rescued today.

9) My sister. I talk to my sister every day after work. This is not an exaggeration. Plus, we send each other pictures of our dogs every day. We amuse each other on a daily basis, and no matter what is happening, it’s likely that my sister will soon send me a funny picture of her dog and I will be smiling very soon.

10) Glinny. I love my dog.
